Security Collection of Container Vessel

e towage of containership following grounding or main engine failure

Incident on a loaded Container Ship, such as, fire, grounding and subsequent firefighting / refloating operations usually gives rise to a General Average situation. On Shipowners declaring General Average, LMA as GA Adjusters collects General Average / Salvage Security from cargo / container interests i.e. Shippers, Freight Forwarders, Consignees, Cargo Underwriters, Container Owners, etc. This generally means dealing with multiple parties, as today, we have very large Container Ships loaded with cargo in thousands of containers booked by Freight Forwarder both on FCL (Full Container Load) and LCL cargo (Less than Container Load) / groupage service.

The toughest task before an Adjuster in a Container Ship GA is to get information of cargo in the containers carried onboard.  In order to identify all the individual shipments within each such container, LMA collects detailed data of FCL and LCL cargo from the concerned in cargo viz. Consignees, Cargo Receivers and / or Freight Forwarders. On receipt of satisfactory GA Security, Release Orders are issued by LMA for delivering the cargo at termination of the voyage or at the destination.  Data of Cargo / Containers so released is uploaded online by LMA to facilitate prompt tracking by multiple parties involved.

The major issue in collection of GA security from the various cargo within a LCL Container is that, some cargo interests are insured, whereas, others are not. Further, the insured cargo cannot be released despite having provided satisfactory GA guarantee because, the owners of some uninsured cargo, either have not provided GA Cash Deposit, or may be reluctant to give the same without assessing the condition of his cargo.  This often leads to delay in delivery of Cargo / Containers and at LMA, we liaise with all interests to keep this delay at minimum.
